Llangasty Village Hall - A Brief History

Llangasty Hall was built in 1929 in memory of R T and R M Raikes. In 1935 it was given to the Church in Wales to be run as a Parish Hall. The Hall was extensively restored in the early 2000s and since then has been run as a Village Hall to serve the local communities of Llangasty, Pennorth, Talyllyn and Scethrog. It is a very traditional rural village hall, benefitting from magnificent views over the lake and towards the mountains beyond.

There are foundation stones to either side of the front door.
Both are difficult to read due to lichen growth.

The one on the left side of the entrance door simply records the date of construction as 1929. To the right side of the door the stone is inscribed: ‘In memory of R T and R M Raikes of Treberfydd’

The Raikes family still occupy Treberfydd in nearby Llangasty Talyllyn. In 1935 they gifted the land and building to be run as a Parish Hall by the Church in Wales.

Inside the Hall above the fireplace is an arts and crafts style wooden plaque which reads:

‘This Hall has been built by their children in memory of Robert Taunton and Rosa Margaret Raikes of Treberfydd whose lives were devoted to the happiness of others and as a memorial to their ideals of Christian fellowship’

In the 1935 conveyance of Llangasty Village Hall the ‘objects and purposes’ of the Hall were set out as follows:

‘The objects and purposes of a Church Hall in connection with the Church of St Gastyn Llangasty Tal y Llyn aforesaid including Social Gatherings and Entertainments and other lawful means of aiding and supporting objects and requirements of the Church in Wales Clubs and Meetings of the Parishioners (except that meetings of a Political character or meetings in anyway detrimental to the Church in Wales shall not be allowed) Reading and Recreational Rooms Women Institute Boy Scouts or Brigade Girl Guides Work parties Musical and other classes of Instruction may be considered as being amongst the primary objects of the Building’

The Hall was managed by the Rector and Churchwardens of the Parish of Llangasty along with representatives from the Raikes family until March 2006. Responsibilities for day to day management and financial matters were then delegated to a committee formed of local people. So began the Llangasty Village Hall Restoration Group. Their work culminated in a major restoration and refurbishment of the Hall and their successors now continue to care for and manage the Hall.  They are now also the proud guardians of the Phone Box in Pennorth which is a site for a variety of community based initiatives.
