What exactly does the WI do?

The WI is a unique organisation shaped by its members. In 1915, it set out to give women a voice and to be a force for good in the community. Today, it is the largest women’s organisation in the UK and prides itself on being a trusted place for all women of all generations, to share experiences and learn from each other.
A WI membership offers the opportunity to meet women in your local area, to make friends and make a difference in your community. We campaign nationally on a wide range of issues and provide life-long learning and self-development opportunities for women in England and Wales.

 Llangasty WI

This group has been meeting in the beautiful setting of the village Hall for over 90 years since 1929. Normally WI meetings happen once a month and involve a speaker or demonstration on a wide variety of subjects followed by the chance to chat over refreshments. A day trip is organised in the summer and an afternoon tea with funds raised for a local charity. There are opportunities to enter national and county competitions in a wide range of crafts and skills.  It’s not just jam and Jerusalem….

Although the COVID 19 pandemic put a stop to meetings at the Hall members were determined to keep in touch and began meeting online via Zoom. Llangasty was the first WI in Brecknock to do so. A weekly half hour session was developed with a theme for each week. People were asked to think about a favourite place, send a photograph of their garden, share a poem or story, or a family recipe.

Our speakers during the enforced lockdown were drawn from near and far – thanks to the wonders of the internet. Topics were varied and ranged from a talk on the elimination of polio to the illustrated history of the picture postcard. There were also live online demonstrations on floral arrangements and folded greetings cards.

The WI is everything you want it to be

Whatever your reason for joining, we offer all kinds of opportunities to all kinds of women. For some, it’s a chance to meet people and catch up with friends. For others, it’s a way to learn valuable life skills and make a difference in their communities through WI campaigns.

The WI is what you make of it

WIs come in all shapes and sizes and our members can be involved in the way that suits them. This can mean joining a local WI or setting up a new group with other like-minded women.
